Cheese Sandwich with Bacon, Pear and Caramelized Onions

When cheese sandwiches are made with so much love as these you got real party fare. This recipe has that little extra that turns you into a kitchen hero.

Serves: 4
Preparation time: 1 hour

8 slices of white bread
2 tablespoons dairy butter
1 onion, sliced
1 teaspoon sugar
½ teaspoon vinegar
8 slices of Cheddar cheese
8 slices cooked bacon
1 pear, sliced
2 teaspoons French’s Deli Mustard, Spicy Brown


[1] Melt the butter in a frying pan over low heat and add the onion in slices, sugar and vinegar. Cook, stirring until the onions are caramelized. It should take about 30-40 minutes.

[2] Put the onion an a  plate and allow to cool.

[3] Fry the bacon crisp.

[4] Heat a skillet or toaster / sandwich iron to medium heat. Put some mustard on 4 of the slices.

[5] Add the cheddar slices, pear slices, onion, bacon and place another slice of cheese on top, then anothe slice of bread.

[6] Spread some butter on the top slice of bread, turn the sandwich gently and butter the bottom slice.

[7] Place the sandwich in the skillet / toaster / sandwich iron and fry until nicely golden and the cheese has melted.

[8] Cut the sandwiches in half and serve them warm, preferably with a small salad. For a solid dinner serve the sandwiches as accessories to a hearty soup.

Tip: If using a skillet it is smart to press the sandwiches  lightly with a spatula while you are cooking them.
