Classic Norwegian Fish Gratin

Fish gratin is a classic Norwegian dinner dish. It’s a simple, fast and child-friendly way to cook fish. It has always been one of my favorites, whether made with potatoes, macaroni or shellfish like here.

Cooking time: 12-15 min.
Oven temperature: 200-225° C / 390-435° F
Middle shelf in the oven
Can not be frozen.

About 400 g [0,9 lb] boiled, cleaned white fish without bones
1 shallots
1/2 lemon
200 g [7 oz] cleaned shrimp (optional)
4 eggs
2 dl [0,4 pt] cream, 35%
2 tablespoons flour
4-5 tablespoons grated cheese
Salt, pepper, nutmeg
Parsley or dill


[1] Butter 4 portion ramkins and distribute fish, finely chopped onions and if you use it cleaned shrimps in the ramkins. Drizzle some lemon juice over each.

[2] Whip the eggs together with cream, flour, grated cheese and spices. Pour the mixture into the ramkins and bake as indicated. Sprinkle with parley or dill before serving.

[3] Serve the gratin hot with lemon wedges, white bread and soft butter, stirred with lemon juice and grated horseradish.
