Molasses Walnut Cookies

Molasses Walnut Cookies

3 1/2 cups sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1 cup shortening
3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1 cup molasses
2 eggs
1 cup chopped walnuts


[1] Set oven for moderately hot, 375° F. Grease baking sheets. Sift together flour and next 5 ingredients.

[2] Beat shortening in a bowl until creamy. Add and beat in sugar slowly; beat until light. Stir in molasses. Add eggs and beat well. Add flour mixture and nuts to egg mixture, blending well.

[3] Drop dough by tablespoonfuls, about 2 inches apart, on baking sheets. Bake 10 to 12 minutes. Remove from pans; cool on racks.

Makes about 5 dozen.
