Old-fashioned Norwegian Mutton Soup

Good bread and old-fashioned soup is the recipe
for a tasty dinner

2.5 dl [0,5 pt] barley grain
5 dl [1 pt] water for softening
600 g [1,3 lb] mutton
1 liter [2 pt] water
1 large onion
1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
200 g [7 oz] fennel
1 tablespoon bouillion powder
garlic (optional)
400 g [14 oz] of carrot
400 g [14 oz] potato, light boiled type
200 g [7 oz] napa cabbage (bok choy)


[1] Put the barley grain in 1 pt of water. Leave them to soak overnight. Strain before cooking.

[2] Cut onion and fennel into cubes. Put them in a pot with mutton, 2 pt of water and pepper. Bring to a boil and cook on low heat for about. 20 minutes.

[3] Taste with a bouillion powder, salt and pepper. Garlic can also be used.

[4] Take the meat up. Cut it into cubes. Returned  meat and bones to the pot and  boiled for another 45 minutes.

[5] Peel carrot and potato and cut into cubes. Add them to the pot while shredding the napa cabbage. Put it in the put and cook for a few minutes.
