Orange Glory

The old fashioned “dowdy” that our grandmothers used to serve was a simple bread and fruit pudding. Many of us still have tantalizing memories of it. The present day version comes to us in a new guise.

1 Pint vanilla ice cream
2 oranges
Orange sauce *
Plain cake batter

Cover bottom of a well-buttered layer cake pan or other shallow pan with orange sections and orange sauce. Pour over this a plain cake batter. Bake in a moderate oven (375° F.) about thirty-five minutes. Cut in individual servings, top with Sealtest Vanilla Ice Cream and garnish with orange sections and orange sauce. If desired add two tablespoons brandy to the sauce. (The cake may be used hot or cold.)

Serves four to six

* Orange Sauce

3/4 cup sugar
1 cup orange juice
2 tablespoons grated orange rind

Boil sugar and orange juice and rind together until quite syrupy, about three minutes. Remove from heat and add 1 tablespoon sherry flavoring if desired. This sauce may be kept in a covered jar in the refrigerator.

This makes about 1 1/4 cups sauce
