Make your own orange syrup and treat friends and family to the most delicious syrup for pancakes or ice cream.
Syrup is the common name for sweeteners, which traditionally have been made with sugar beet or cane, or using juices from trees such as maple. This orange syrup is both sweet and tart, so it is perfect for sweetening thick American pancakes, or to pour over ice cream or use in baking.
Makes one small bottle
What you need to orange syrup
1 dl [0,2 pt] water
250 g [8,8 oz] cane sugar
½ vanilla pod
2½ dl [0,5 pt] freshly squeezed orange juice
How to make the orange syrup
Bring water and sugar to a boil. Turn down the heat immediately, and simmer for about 30 min. under a lid. The mixture should now be light golden.
Add the vanilla pod and orange juice. Stir gently until the mixture reach a boil. Turn down and simmer for another 30 minutes.
Let the orange syrup cool down and pour it into a small scalded bottle.
Tip. It is important that you scald your bottle or let it stand in the oven at 300 F / 150 C for 30 minutes to kill all bacteria. This way your orange syrup will keep much longer.
