Spanish Chocolate Fried Bread

A great favourite in Spain where it is known as torrijas.

stale bread slices, 1/2 inch (1 ¼ cm) thick
1 egg yolk
1/2 pint (250 ml) milk
1 tablespoon sherry
butter for frying
caster sugar
grated chocolate

[1] Cut the bread into fingers about 1 inch  (2,5 cm) wide.

[2] Beat the egg yolk and add the milk and sherry.

[3] Dip the bread into this, drain and fry until golden in the butter

[4] Drain on absorbent paper, sprinkle with caster sugar and cover with grated chocolate, reserving some to decorate.

[5] Pile on to a dish and sprinkle with chocolate.

[6] Serve very hot.
