A great favourite in Spain where it is known as torrijas.
stale bread slices, 1/2 inch (1 ¼ cm) thick
1 egg yolk
1/2 pint (250 ml) milk
1 tablespoon sherry
butter for frying
 Cut the bread into fingers about 1 inch (2,5 cm) wide.
 Beat the egg yolk and add the milk and sherry.
 Dip the bread into this, drain and fry until golden in the butter
 Drain on absorbent paper, sprinkle with caster sugar and cover with grated chocolate, reserving some to decorate.
 Pile on to a dish and sprinkle with chocolate.
 Serve very hot.
