Grilling is a stone age way of baking bread but don’t let that lead you to thing that bread baked this way isn’t just delicious. Particularly when using this Italian inspied recipe complete with olive oil, salt flakes and rosemary.
Why not bake your own bread when you’re camping? Baking bread on a slab of stone is bread baking Stone Age style. If you really want to create authentic northern European Stone Age bread replace the wheat grains and wheat flour in the recipe with rye grain and rye flour. The wheat had not come this far north at that time. And skip the salt and taste the bread with wild herbs that would have grown here then, for example, yarrow or nettles.
These delicious snacks can be made ready at home before you head for the hike and grilled on a campfire grill grid when you have set up camp, dinner is over and the tea water is boiling. If you don’t bother to bring a grid a few stick will work just as well.
You could make these snacks at home too of course, but we all know they will taste much, much better by the campfire – Ted 😉

Gáhkko is a traditional Sami flat bread /bread that has a faint taste of anise. Excellent, and delicious as an accessory for stews and soups, and gorgeous with any kind of cheese. There are countless recipes and ways to bake it, but the best way and what gives the bread the best flavour is to fry them in a dry frying pan on the campfire. It works just as fine to bake this bread on a griddle or in an oven as well. Some sami bakers make them them large, some make them small.
Aluminium foil is an absolute must when packing for a camping hike. Whether you packed a small gas cooker or you plan to do all your cooking on the campfire the foil will provide an easy and carefree way to prepare hot food. More recipes using foil will follow in this series – Ted 🙂

I know that we Norwegians are more keen on hiking than most, so if you prefer to bring these muffins for a picnic rather than on a hike that is no skin off my nose – Ted 😉
