The frosting in this recipe, when tightly covered, may be kept in refrigerator several days before using. It is a most useful frosting for it spreads and swirls very easily and will remain soft and creamy on the cake. Use it for picnic or lunch-box cakes, or for cakes that must be stored.

Mint is I guess something one either love or hate. I have friends who can’t stand it, but for my part I love it in any form. Nothing beat a good book and a steaming cup of mint tea in the evening particulary when combined with a few thin After Eight mint wafers. A couple of these brownies would do nicely too – Ted

These bars are richly flavored with molasses, strong coffee and a generous portion of ground cloves. They’re adapted from a recipe originally published 33 years ago in a community cookbook from Ladies Aid at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in South Milwaukee. Slather the coffee icing on while the bars are still warm.
